The September 10 Freeman’s | Hindman Fine Books & Manuscripts auction in Philadelphia features almost 300 lots of printed and manuscript Americana, Literature, Artist Books, Travel & Exploration, and more. The sale is led by a fine example of the first official broadside printing of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ($30,000-$50,000), a handsome first octavo edition of Audubon's The Birds of America ($20,000-$30,000), and a first edition of Andre Level's monograph on the art of Pablo Picasso, including the signed lithograph ($20,000-$30,000).
Other highlights include the scarce English edition of A Short Narrative of the Horrid Massacre in Boston,1770, recounting the events of that night ($10,000-$15,000); the monumental Arion Press edition of James Joyce's Ulysses with etchings by Robert Motherwell ($10,000-$15,000); a complete portfolio of Josef Albers Die Oberflache, featuring five signed screen prints ($10,000-$15,000); the earliest obtainable Connecticut printing of the U.S. Constitution ($10,000 - $15,000); 27 lots of rare and unique productions from the Black Sun Press; over 50 lots of fine first and rare editions of Charles Dickens from the collection of Dr. David L.
